MARTINSVILLE — Former board member for the Metropolitan School District of Martinsville (2000-08) and local dentist Randy Wells graduated from Martinsville High School in 1973.This year he will be inducted into the high school’s Alumni Hall of Fame.Academically he was sixth in a class of 135. He is known as one of MHS’ finest athletes and students. He was also coach of many youth sports teams and he has been a long-time leader in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.In high school, he was a member of the National Honor Society, Latin Club, Hi-Y, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Letterman’s Club. He was Student Council president. He was MVP of the football, basketball and baseball teams. He also wrote copy for the school newspaper and yearbook. Over the years, he has also coached approximately 45 Little League and Li’l Artie teams.He will be inducted into the Martinsville High School Alumni Hall of Fame at 5 p.m Feb. 19 in the high school cafeteria, along with four other graduates who have given much time and effort to their community.Wells was born March 25, 1955, to George and Donna Sue Wells in Martinsville. In 1834, one of his ancestors, Wiley Burns, donated the property where Liberty Christian Church now stands. Wells and his family continue to attend Liberty today. “I became a member April 15, 1968, at which time I was baptized by Richard Throckmorton. I have also supported the Fellowship of Christian Athletes since 1971,” Wells said.Excels at DePauwWells attended DePauw University during a time when the university gave athletic scholarships. “After graduating from MHS, I accepted a full-ride football scholarship to DePauw University,” Wells said. “They could give athletic scholarships in the 1970s, which was lucky for me as it made it more affordable for my family. I chose DePauw because: 1. it was highly recommended academically, 2. it was close to Martinsville and 3. they would let me play basketball as well. “Once I got over there, one of my assistant football coaches, who also happened to be the head baseball coach, talked me into playing baseball, too.”At DePauw, he earned nine varsity letters and in football was All-ICC (Indiana Collegiate Conference), second team, Churchmen’s All American, Monon Bell Award recipient and team captain. In basketball, he was honorable mention Academic All American and voted the team’s most competitive player. In baseball, he was all ICC, All-District, batting champion (.375) and team captain.National Athlete of the YearWells was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and in 1976 was chosen the fraternity’s National Athlete of the Year. In 1977, he received the F.C. Tucker Award as DePauw’s outstanding senior athlete and was named to an honorary leadership organization known as Gold Key.He began his dental training at the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1977. In 1978, he married his college sweetheart, Sarah Jane Kile. She continues to teach first grade at Centerton Elementary School. “We have been married 32 years and have been blessed with three children, John, Mary and Mark,” said Wells.In 1981, Wells graduated with honors from dental school and opened a dental office in Martinsville. In 2000, Dr. Monty Marvel and Wells merged their dental practices. In 2006, they brought in Dr. Nathan Hall. The practice is known as Wells, Marvel & Hall, LLC Family Dentistry. Indianapolis Monthly magazine recently recognized the business as one of Indy’s “Top Dentists.”In 2001, Wells was inducted into the Hall of Fame at DePauw.
