FLAT ROCK – Leading 21-14 coming out of halftime, Flat Rock coach Buck Reaume opted for the onside kick to start the second half of Friday’s Division 6 playoff matchup with Detroit Denby.
“They had one guy we did not want to kick to, and he was back deep,” Reaume explained. “So we decided to onside it.”
The decision paid off. The Rams (8-2) went on to score on the ensuing drive and never looked back.
Flat Rock receiver Adam Szalay broke the school record for career receiving yards, in a performance which included catching a touchdown pass from his brother, fellow receiver Evan Szalay, on a trick play. Jacob Hagan rushed for three touchdowns for the Rams.
The Rams (8-2) will host Detroit Voyageur next week.
MONROE – St. Mary Catholic Central will stay at home at Navarre Field to host Clinton in the second round of the Division 7 playoffs after staying perfect at 10-0.

CLINTON - Whiteford gave up touchdowns on Clinton's first five possessions but was still within a touchdown when the clock ran out in a Division 7 contest.
"We were right there," Bobcat coach Todd Thieken said. "I'm very proud of how the kids stayed in it. We had some unfortunate things happen in the first half."
The Bobcats trailed 38-24 but got the ball back with about four minutes left. A big pass play from Tre Eitniear to Brek Ruddy put them into the Red Zone. On a fourth-and-10, Tre Eitniear found Trenton Eitniear on an 11-yard pass to get a first-and-goal.
Trenton Eitniear's fourth touchdown of the night and two-point conversion pulled the Bobcats within 38-32. Clinton, however, recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock to win the Division 7 first-round playoff game.
Eitniear rushed for 59 yards. Ruddy had 83 yards on the ground. Tre Eitniear passed for 75 yards.
Whiteford's season ends 5-5.
PETERSBURG – The Bulldogs’ stellar season ended in heartbreaking fashion at home in the opening round of the Division 8 playoffs.
Trailing 14-7 at halftime, Summerfield came back in the second half only to see the visitors take the decisive lead with just under a minute to play.
“We played incredibly hard,” Bulldogs coach Dylan Szegedi said. “We came back and battled and played a really great second half. Offensively, we struggled a little bit at times to just execute the simple things. But overall, we played them hard, and I could not be more proud of our boys.
“We just came up short. It happens sometimes.”
Mitchell Gomulinski led Summerfield on both sides of the ball Friday, rushing for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns on 21 carries and tallying a team-high 16 tackles. Jude Flowers and Nate Wadsworth finished with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively.

The cities of Overland Park and Lenexa are teaming up to replace the 103rd Street bridge that crosses Flat Rock Creek.
Last week, the Overland Park City Council Public Works Committee voted 6-0 to recommend approval of two interlocal agreements with the city of Lenexa tied to the project.
One agreement details the responsibilities for the bridge project, while the other lays out each city’s responsibilities in maintaining it into the future.
The north side of this stretch of 103rd Street is in Lenexa near Flat Rock Creek Park and the city pool of the same name. The south side is in Overland Park near the Oak Park neighborhood.
Although the cities will split the project’s cost — $1.35 million, or about $675,000 a piece — Lenexa will ultimately administer it.
The bridge that exists today has space for two lanes of motor vehicle traffic. There is also a five-foot pedestrian bridge next to it and a completely separate bridge for foot and bicycle traffic on the Overland Park side of the road.
Per Overland Park’s capital improvement plan, the 103rd Street bridge that crosses the creek needs replacing “due to ceiling deterioration” and to reduce flooding that affects the flow of traffic — or “roadway overtopping.”
Additionally, the actual structure for the new bridge will need to be larger than initially anticipated “to increase the waterway opening of the bridge.”
Lenexa City Engineer Tim Green said in an email that the new 103rd Street bridge will be a 16-foot-by-10-foot structure — compared to the existing 12-foot-by-8-foot. It will be paved with curb and gutter.
The new bridge will still have room for one lane of vehicle traffic going both directions, but instead of one pedestrian path, it will include two 5-foot-wide dedicated pedestrian lanes, according to Overland Park city documents.
