Tamatha Bibbo has been the principal at Pollard Middle School in Needham for 10 years. She has never graduated this many twins.

“Just the sheer number, the volume, and in comparison, typically we have between five and 10 sets of twins, but to have 23 … it’s been so fun,” Bibbo said.

The 23 sets of twins, 46 students, make up a 10th of the 454-person eighth-grade class that graduated on Wednesday, Bibbo said. Technically, there are 47 twins in the graduating class, but one eighth grader does not have their twin at the school, Bibbo said.

In Needham, this community of twins has grown up together. Michele Fox, mother of twins Ethan and Harrison, said a group of 12 twins, including her sons, grew up together in Needham since they were infants. Beth Hammerstrand, Cal and Owen’s mom, said she’s been best friends with the mother of another set of twins since their prenatal classes.

The 454 eighth graders, including the twins, crossed the stage in Needham in a ceremony filled with student performances and friends and family, Bibbo said.

“It was a fantastic day,” she said. “The student speeches were heartfelt, and it was a great conclusion to their middle school years.”

Cal and Owen Hammerstrand, both 14, are identical twins, but luckily Cal wears mostly red and Owen mostly blue. Owen also wears glasses, which the pair said helps their classmates, and even their close friends, to tell them apart.

“It was very unique,” Cal said of his middle school experience. “I had multiple twins in some of my classes, and I even had six in one class.”

Owen said he didn’t even notice how many sets of twins their school had.

“Once I paid more attention to it, I just realized how many of our friends are twins,” Owen said.

During April Fools’ Day, the identical twins decided to trick their classmates. The pair acted like they had switched classes, wearing the other twin’s classic color, but they stayed in their own classes.

“They totally got away with it,” said their mother, Beth. “Many people were very stumped.”

For Cal and Owen, a twin is a built-in best friend. They play soccer and baseball together and even like to play the same positions.

“Everything we do, we do together,” Cal said.

“We just enjoy doing it together,” Owen added.

Twins Lukas and Sameer Patel received the Needham Exchange Club’s annual community service award at Wednesday’s ceremony. It was a recognition given to five students in the class who went “above and beyond” on their 10 hour community service requirement, Bibbo said.

“We’re very committed to community service,” she said. “It’s important to learn how to give back.”

For Lukas and Sameer’s work, $100 will be donated to Storytime Crafts, a nonprofit dedicated to inclusive childhood literacy opportunities.

This past week, some teachers were surprised to learn the exact number of twins in the graduating class, Bibbo said.

“We were aware that there were a lot of sets of twins, but we didn’t realize it was such a big deal,” Bibbo said. “A number of my teachers were shocked. ... It’s a fun surprise.”

She said the twins have not caused too much confusion in the classroom because they are not all identical. There are about 10 sets of identical twins, she said.

Fox, one of the mothers of twins in the class, said parents checked the Guinness World Records book and the most sets of twins in a class was around 40, but the 23 sets “certainly is a record for Needham” and it might even be a record for the state, she said.

The current graduating high school class has eight sets of twins, the largest number Bibbo remembers, she said.

“It is absolutely amazing, the coincidence of it all,” Fox said. “Every grade has a large number of twins, but this is an astounding, historic number.”

All but one set of the twins will go on to Needham High School together, Bibbo said.

Brayden Mahoney, 14, and his twin, Lauren, will continue to the high school together. Brayden couldn’t get away with an April Fools’ Day trick like that played by identical twins Cal and Owen, but he said having his twin sister in school is still “pretty cool.”

“Overall it’s the same thing as having a sibling, but now that people say it, I’m more grateful for it,” he said.

Per Barry Jackson, the Dolphins are interested in bringing back defensive back, Nik Needham. An undrafted free agent in 2019, Needham re-signed with Miami last season, and clearly, the versatile boundary cornerback/turn slot-specialist/safety candidate’s work is not done in South Florida.

Per source, Dolphins want to keep impending FA Nik Needham and a new deal is expected to be finalized shortly. Needham, one of Dolphins' best undrafted rookie signings of this era, can play both cornerback and safety, of course.

The potential deal will help maintain consistency in a secondary that will not have Xavien Howard, the longest-tenured defensive Dolphin from last year’s team. Connecting some dots, as a rookie, Needham subbed in for an injured Howard and performed well on the outside in 2019, playing in 12 games in which he started 11. He registered 11 passes defensed, including two interceptions in relief.

Needham followed his rookie year with two consecutive seasons in which he registered a pair of interceptions, and in 2021, he was considered a top-tier slot corner in the entire NFL. In fact, according to Pro Football Focus, his 2021 coverage grade from the slot was the best in the league (90.8), as he didn’t allow a single touchdown from that area of the field that season. 2022 was looking to continue that momentum until an Achilles injury occurred in Week 6 against the Minnesota Vikings, ending his season.

2023 was essentially a wash, as Needham rehabbed his injury and returned to the 53-man roster yet didn’t have ample opportunity to show his skills to then-defensive coordinator Vic Fangio during OTAs and training camp. A new defensive coordinator in Anthony Weaver could create a chance for Needham to return to his 2021 form if utilized in the slot, or should he be a prime candidate to step in for Xavien Howard, as he has proven to handle that task as well.

Intriguing as well is the fact that Needham has safety ability, and Miami does have a few more unrestricted free agents in DeShon Elliott and Brandon Jones to think about. The move to retain Needham creates flexibility, and it’s a bit unknown how this Dolphins’ secondary will look in 2024. All-World defensive back Jalen Ramsey could be used a bit more as a chess piece with this new scheme, and like Needham, fellow defensive backs Cam Smith and Kader Kohou could be moved around to different spots in the defensive backfield.

Whatever happens with the rest of the secondary, the defense, and the Dolphins, as a whole, is still up in the air. However, as this week ends, re-signing Needham was a step in the right direction. His work ethic, overall knowledge of the game, and potential are all reasons he was re-signed yet again by the team that saw his ability as a college student and took a chance on him five years ago.

Over his five-season career with the Dolphins, Needham has recorded 199 total tackles, 25 passes defensed, six interceptions, a forced fumble, and a recovered fumble. He also took an interception to the house against the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football back in 2021, a “Nik-6” as some would call it.

The Dolphins have agreed to terms on a contract to re-sign defensive back Nik Needham, one of their best 21st century discoveries in the undrafted rookie free agent market.

A deal for Needham to return for a sixth season in Miami in now in place, a source said Saturday.

Needham, signed out of UTEP after the 2019 draft, made 51 appearances and 27 starts and had six interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, in 3 ½ seasons for Miami before rupturing his Achilles tendon in October 2022.

He wasn’t activated until Oct. 29 of last season and played just 71 defensive snaps, essentially serving as Miami’s seventh or eighth defensive back when everyone was healthy.

He played double figures in defensive snaps (12 and 14) only in two blowout wins. By contrast, Needham logged 617 and 607 defensive snaps in his last two fully healthy seasons, in 2020 and 2021, under Brian Flores.

But he’s healthy now, and the front office remains optimistic about Needham’s ability to be the player he was before the Achilles injury.

After working as Miami’s primary nickel corner in 2020 and 2021, Needham never got a serious look for that job after returning in late October. The Dolphins remained committed all season to Kader Kohou in that role.

Needham described his role this past season as “kind of a safety-type position opposite the nickel in dime” packages.

The Dolphins value his ability to play nickel cornerback, boundary cornerback and safety and showed faith in him by re-signing him to a minimum contract last March even while knowing it might take half the season to return to game action.

In a conversation late last season, Needham said: “I love the Dolphins. They gave me the best opportunity in the world. I owe them my life. That’s how I feel. I would love to be a Dolphins next year.”

Needham is the third potential Dolphins free agent to agree to a new contract with Miami in the past 40 hours, following safety Elijah Campbell and punter Jake Bailey.

They have interest in keeping receiver Braxton Berrios, linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel, guard Isaiah Wynn and running back Salvon Ahmed, among others.

Safety Brandon Jones, another impending unrestricted free agent, remains very much on Miami’s radar. The Dolphins like him.

The Dolphins must clear out more than $16 million off their salary cap to be cap compliant by the start of the league year at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

But realistically, they need to clear out about $40 million in space to have the capacity to make competitive offers at several critical need positions when teams can legally begin speaking with other teams’ free agents at noon on Monday.

If Christian Wilkins departs (which ESPN says is likely) and if Robert Hunt finds better offers elsewhere (that’s the expectation barring a dramatic increase in what Miami is willing to do), Miami will need to sign at least two defensive tackles (Raekwon Davis could be one of them), a starting inside linebacker, a starting cornerback, a safety, a guard and two edge players, among other needs.

▪ Restructuring -- or extending -- the contracts of Jalen Ramsey and Tyreek Hill remains the easiest way to clear out significant cap space.

Per a source, the Dolphins also have considered and discussed extensions or restructurings for players earning significantly less money than those two as a way to clear out 2024 cap space.

As far as players who could be cut to clear out cap space, running back Jeff Wilson Jr. remains at serious risk. Wilson’s $2.6 million 2024 salary is non-guaranteed and his cap hit would fall from $3.7 million to $782,500 if he’s cut.

The Dolphins also would save money by cutting quarterback Mike White, but that wouldn’t accomplish much because it would leave them needing to create cap room to sign another backup. White’s $3.5 million salary for 2024 is non-guaranteed and his cap hit would drop from $5.2 million to $1.7 million if he’s cut. His 2024 cap hit could be lowered with a contract extension, however.

Duke Riley’s $2.2 million 2024 salary is non-guaranteed, and his cap hit would drop from $3.1 million to $585,000 if he’s cut. But the need to replace Riley would seemingly offset any modest cap benefit. And Riley and David Long Jr. are the only inside linebackers with significant playing experience on the roster following the release of Jerome Baker.

Col Needham recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of IMDb’s acquisition by Amazon and his 25th Amazon anniversary, making him among the 30 longest-tenured Amazon employees and the longest-tenured CEO and founder at Amazon across all companies acquired by Amazon. A lifelong movie buff, Needham drew upon his love of film and technology to create what is now the world's most popular and authoritative source for information on movies, TV shows, and celebrities. We caught up with him to learn more.

Here’s what he had to say about the origins of his company, his passion for movies, and what it means to be an Amazon employee.

I am fortunate to have been born at the right time for two big revolutions: home computing and home video. I’ve loved film since an early age, and in the early '80s I was watching so many films on VHS that I started to lose track of what I had seen. I bought a paper diary and started writing down the titles as I watched them. I soon expanded this into a database of titles and major credits on my home computer. It was just for my own use—so I could run reports like “How many Alfred Hitchcock films have I seen?” By 1988 I was in a film discussion group on the internet, where I met some like-minded collectors of entertainment information. One thing led to another, we pooled our data, and I wrote and published the first version of the IMDb software on October 17, 1990.

I have been in love with film for my entire life. My earliest memory is going to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs when I was five, and since then, all I wanted to do was see more and more films. Luckily my wife of 33 years is always happy to watch with me, whether at a film festival, the local cinema, or our in-home theater. Film continues to be my primary source of both entertainment and inspiration. As Davis (played by Steve Martin) says in Grand Canyon: “All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.”

Thanks to my IMDb ratings list, I can tell you precisely how many films I have seen. As of May 3, 2023, I have watched 14,845 unique films. The number does not include second and subsequent viewings—so the 50+ times I’ve seen my all-time favorite film, Vertigo, only count as one film. It’s tough to pick only a few to highlight here, but my top films of 2022 are available in this IMDb list.

In December 1997, I received an email from Amazon’s then-general counsel, saying, “Hi Col, Jeff Bezos and I were discussing film websites the other day and naturally, IMDb came up in the conversation. We’re going to be in the UK next month and we’d love to meet with you.” Amazon had just started advertising on IMDb, and I hoped the meeting was to discuss extending the contract. If you grew up in the '70s, you probably remember Eight Is Enough, ABC's dramatic comedy about a widowed newspaper columnist and his eight children. The show ran for five seasons before wrapping in 1981—and during that time, the sizable family gained a following to match. The youngest of the five girls in the brood, Elizabeth Bradford, was played by actor Connie Needham, who was just 18 when the show premiered. Today, Needham is 61 and has moved into another field of entertainment in her native California. Read on to see her now!

Needham continued acting after Eight Is Enough.

Needham is best known as one of the eight Bradford kids, but after the series concluded, she appeared in smaller roles on several other shows. Most notably, she played two different characters on the TV series Fame, which told the story of high school students at a performing arts academy in New York City. Additionally, she appeared on The Love Boat, Police Squad!, L.A. Law, and in 1995, she was cast in one episode of Ellen as a waitress.

Needham also appeared in two Eight Is Enough spin-off movies entitled Eight Is Enough: A Family Reunion and An Eight Is Enough Wedding.

In addition to being an actor, Needham is an accomplished dancer.

Though Needham hasn't acted in several decades, she hasn't left the world of entertainment entirely. Most recently, she has worked as a dance instructor in Orange County, California. For some, this comes as no surprise, given that two of her most notable TV roles after Eight Is Enough were as dance instructors on Fame and Police Squad!

Needham had a difficult battle with ovarian cancer.

In 2009, Needham was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer. The following year, the star opened up to Radar Online to share the challenges of her treatment and even recalled the moment she learned she was sick. "I was having a lot of bloating and I started having a little difficulty breathing to the point that I thought I had a lung infection," she shared. After a physical exam and further testing, she was diagnosed with cancer. "I went into that weird sort of shock, where everything shuts down and you don't hear anything else," she explained.

After her own diagnosis, Needham began advocating for the Women's Cancer Research Foundation, even competing in a Dancing With the Stars-style fundraiser on behalf of the organization. Today, Needham has reportedly made a full recovery from her cancer, but she is still spreading a message of awareness to others. "Pay close attention to your body and don't assume things are normal," she warned when speaking with Radar Online.

She married a crew member from her hit show.

In 1979, while Eight Is Enough was in its third season, Connie married David Needham, a set designer on the show with Hollywood lineage (his father was Hal Needham, the famed stuntman and producer who won an honorary Oscar in 2012). The couple had two daughters, Kimberly and Taylor Needham, and divorced in 2005.

However, while speaking with Radar in 2010, she discussed weathering her cancer diagnosis with the support of a more recent love interest. "I have a fabulous boyfriend, bless his heart, and he stayed right with me," she said.

The property has a hill that property owner Rufus Page said is one of the highest in Mt. Juliet.

The fireworks are expected to be visible from several area church and other parking lots, Needham said. Many residents in surrounding neighborhoods will be able to view the display watch from home, according to Needham and Page.

The Memorial Day display on May 31will be held at about 8:15 p.m.

“The Memorial Day celebration will honor our veterans and allow people to see where the fireworks will be best visible to them on the Fourth (of July),” Needham said. “This is a better spot.”

Needham and Page agree the intent is to use the Circle P Ranch grounds to light the fireworks on July 4 in the coming years, they said.

Why there are two shows

Needham and the family of Needham’s Nursery in Mt. Juliet partnered with the city to light the fireworks display for approximately 30 years.

But Needham scheduled his own show in 2019 when it appeared the city would cancel the July 4 display because development took away the location used at the time to light the fireworks.

The city ended up moving its July 4 show to the Mt. Juliet League fields on Lebanon Road and Needham held his display on private property near Publix and Providence Marketplace in 2019. Needham did not hold his show last year because of COVID-19.

Mt. Juliet plans to hold its July 4 fireworks display this year, officials said.

“We are excited about both shows,” Mt. Juliet City Manager Kenny Martin said.

Needham has named the private display as The Citizens of Mt. Juliet Fireworks Show, he said.

More July 4 weekend events planned

More than 6,000 rounds of fireworks are planned for the July 4 display at Circle P Ranch, Needham said.

And several other community events are scheduled on Saturday July 3, at the Circle P Ranch property leading up to the show. More details are to come but they include:

The city’s fireworks display will be used as a fundraiser for Mt. Juliet League with people given an option to park at the field for a $10 charge. There are other options to park for free, city officials said.
