In a back-and-forth battle that featured multiple lead changes, Polk County Middle School dropped a heartbreaking 13-12 decision Thursday to Flat Rock Middle in Blue Ridge Conference softball action in Flat Rock.
The Wolverines (6-3) staged a remarkable comeback but fell just short as Flat Rock (3-4) rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the win.
After falling behind early when Flat Rock plated four runs in the first inning, Polk Middle chipped away at the deficit. Aubrey Champion delivered an RBI single in the second inning to get the Wolverines on the scoreboard.
Polk Middle added three more runs in the fourth inning, capitalizing on Flat Rock miscues. With two outs, Champion singled and Kayla Hayford was hit by a pitch. Consecutive errors on fly balls by Kenzie Alm and Kendall Taylor allowed Champion, Hayford and Alm to score.
Despite the rally, Flat Rock extended its advantage to 11-4 before Polk Middle began its furious comeback.
The Wolverines plated four runs in the sixth inning, all with two outs. Alm singled and stole second base before Tilly Harris drove her in with a single. Lucy Tessnair then delivered the biggest hit of the game, launching a home run to left field that scored two runs. Bella Lancaster followed with a double, stole third base and scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 11-8.
Polk Middle completed its comeback with four more runs in the seventh inning. Preslie Bradley was hit by a pitch and Champion collected her third hit of the day. After Hayford walked to load the bases, Alm doubled to drive in two runs. Harris then grounded out to bring home Hayford before Tessnair singled to score Alm and give the Wolverines a 12-11 lead.
But Flat Rock responded in its final at-bat, stringing together three singles to score two runs and snatch the victory.
Champion led Polk Middle’s offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Tessnair finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and a home run, while Alm went 2-for-5 with two RBI, three runs scored and a double. Harris contributed a hit and two RBI, while Lancaster added a double and two stolen bases.
The Wolverines return to action Monday, hosting Rugby Middle at 4:30 p.m. at Polk County Recreation Complex.

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. — A western North Carolina couple is finding support from their community after losing their home in the Black Cove Complex Fire.
Matthew and Rosie Rogers owned their home, named the “Cabin of Hope,” in Flat Rock for 40 years.
They were working at their restaurant, Three Chopt Sandwich Shoppe, Sunday when they received an evacuation order. The Black Cove Complex Fire was inching closer to their home.

“We were here [at the restaurant],” Matthew Rogers said. “That’s a good thing, because I would have fought like hell with a fire hose.”
The following morning, Rogers logged onto social media to find an aerial video of his demolished home.
“When I wake up in the morning at 7, that’s the first thing I see,” Rogers said. “I say, ‘Wait, that’s the dock. That’s Lake Anne. Then, there’s my house! Rosie, that’s our house! Rogers, who is originally from Ohio, decided to buy a home in western North Carolina after falling in love with the area while attending summer camp. He and Rosie raised their children and grandchildren at the Cabin of Hope.
They had only been allowed to return to the property a week before the fire because Helene washed out a road to the house.
Rogers said the home was full of photos, his father’s World War II scrapbooks and other family memories.
“We took our documents after the hurricane, but it’s the pictures, the history and a lot of the antiques [that are gone],” Rogers said.
It has been difficult for the Rogers since the fire. But, their friends and neighbors have been visiting them at their restaurant, reminding them that the community they have loved for decades will continue to support them through the tragedy.
“When they call you and come by and tell you, ‘We’re thinking, praying and whatever we can do.’ It makes you stronger,” Rogers said.
Rogers said he plans to rebuild his home. He also hopes to open a summer camp on the property one day.
The Black Cove Complex Fire has destroyed at least 11 homes, according to the North Carolina Forest Service.

The Jackson County School Board voted Wednesday morning to close Flat Rock School, citing financial responsibility, declining enrollment, and limited student opportunities as key factors.
WAAY 31 reached out to Jackson County Schools Superintendent Jason Davidson, who emphasized the board's commitment to transparency, community engagement, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars throughout the decision-making process.
Flat Rock School is set to close at the end of this school year.

The process included a public work session in February and a public meeting in March at the Flat Rock Gym, where community members were able to share their concerns and opinions. However, the final vote rested solely with the Jackson County Board of Education, as there was no community-wide vote on the matter.
The superintendent highlighted several reasons for the closure:
According to Davidson, if Flat Rock School were to apply for establishment under today’s state education requirements, the Alabama State Department of Education would not approve it due to low enrollment and resource limitations.
Flat Rock’s academic performance has also been a concern, particularly in mathematics, where proficiency levels ranked among the lowest in the county. Last spring’s ACAP scores showed:
One concern raised by the community is whether the construction of the Kevin Dukes Career & Innovation Academy played a role in the decision to close Flat Rock. The superintendent firmly denied any connection, stating KDCIA was built to provide enhanced opportunities in arts, STEM, and workforce development for all students across Jackson County.
Additionally, Davidson reassures the public that Jackson County Schools are financially stable, with reserves exceeding the legal requirements and transparent budgeting processes, including two annual budget meetings open to the public.
Community members have also inquired about the use of local sales tax dollars. The superintendent clarified half of these funds go to the capital fund and the other half to the general fund, supporting building projects, maintenance, utilities, transportation, and operational costs. As state funding does not fully cover all school expenses, local monies are used to bridge these financial gaps.
Students currently attending Flat Rock School will be reassigned to nearby schools, including North Sand Mountain, Rosalie, and Pisgah, all of which have the capacity to accommodate additional students. Bus transportation will be provided to facilitate the transition. Both NSM and Pisgah are classified as 2A schools, offering a broader range of academic and extracurricular activities than Flat Rock.

FLAT ROCK, Ala. (WAFF) - The potential closure of a Jackson County school has various parents and alumni confronting the county school board.
The Jackson County Board of Education (JCBOE) has proposed it will close Flat Rock School.
Superintendent Jason Davidson said the operating costs of the campus are much higher than other county schools due to the building’s age.
Davidson also shared that the cost per student at Flat Rock is significantly higher than other schools that have more students enrolled.
Currently, Flat Rock School has a total of 64 students enrolled. In grades K-2, only seven students are enrolled.
Davidson said the decision to potentially close Flat Rock School has nothing to do with academics or sports, but rather a way to efficiently allocate county funds.
He says if the campus continues to operate, the school district could lose out on federal funds because the campus does not meet certain criteria.
On Tuesday, the board met with numerous parents of Flat Rock alumni for a public hearing on the matter.
Some parents addressed the board with concerns over bus routes, where current Flat Rock students will go, and funding.
A few of those who spoke during public comment said they are concerned their children will be losing their beloved teachers who have spent hours providing specialized education.
Many of those in attendance attended Flat Rock themselves and expressed their sentiments about the school.
Superintendent Davidson was there to reassure parents.
”These teachers are not going to go far away. They’re still going to teach your children and our children at a much greater level,” Davidson responded.
“I would have been nobody had it not been for Flat Rock School. I grew up in foster care. If it weren’t for the teachers at this school who believed in me, I would be a statistic,” a parent remarked.
Parent Ollie Barnett says she, like other parents does not believe the board is considering the needs of their children.
”Something that has been in the community for so long being taken away from us especially with children involved. Are we really thinking what’s best for the children are we just thinking about what’s best for themselves?” Barnett said.
JCBOE heard from many parents Tuesday evening, but the decision is ultimately up to board members. They will officially vote on the matter during their regular meeting on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
